Consider the
Benefits of Feng Shui

Feng Shui (pronounced fung shway) means "wind and water", a practice used for over 3,000 years in the Far East and China. It takes into consideration the directional possibilities of landscapes, buildings and individual rooms. Feng Shui is becoming more popular because it really does work! Although it does not promise to create miracles, once applying the "cures" and "enhancers" there will be measurable changes in your life. Some will seem miraculous, of course, and other changes will be more subtle. It is not a religious or spiritual practice. Feng Shui is an art form, really, which, once we use it's symbolism to enhance, we empower and energize our own lives and those of our families.

There are many "schools" of Feng Shui practiced in the world. In England and the Far East the most popular is Form School and Compass School, actually used in combination with one another. In the Western World Black Hat Sect School is practiced predominately. Here is a definition of a few words used often in Feng Shui:

1) Auspicious means "good luck"
2) Inauspicious means "bad luck"
3) Chi is life energy (pronounced "chee" - can be good or bad). Bad Chi can be described as stagnant energy. Good Chi is moving energy, auspicious luck.

For this article we will focus on the Compass and Form Schools, as they are my choice. You will find, though, most American's practice Black Hat Sect School. I feel the more time tested, ancient practice is the best! The first tool you will need is a compass. If you don't know how to read one, get one with an arrow and a face that turns. It worked wonderfully for me, a non-compass reader. A camping compass will do, and the one described above can be found at K-Mart or a sporting goods store.

How to read a compass

A compass needle automatically points magnetic North. Thus, when measuring a room, or your whole house or apartment for Feng Shui -- stand in the middle of the room, or middle of the house or apartment (as best as you can). Where the needle is pointing, turn it to North (thatÔs why you need a compass that turns). Then turn your body to match the direction of the needle. You are facing North. And then write down which rooms are N, W, E, S, NW, SW, SE, NE.

Draw Your House

If you know the exact measurements of your floor plan, make a small scale drawing of your whole house, and write which room is where. Or you can make a makeshift drawing of your floor plan. After getting the whole apartment orientation, do each room by itself. The most important directions you want to know is -- what area's the bathrooms and kitchen are. These affect you the most.

Each direction corresponds to life aspects you want to have and/or achieve. North is Career, South is Fame and Recognition, West is Children/Education and East is Family and Health. For the other four directions, Northwest is Mentors and Networking, Southwest is Marriage and Romantic Prospects, Southeast is Wealth and Prosperity and Northeast is Education and Knowledge.

Don't Flush Your Luck

You can energize these sections of your living room, house or bedrooms to bring you the luck of each section, and also use "cures" where you have inauspicious aspects. The two most inauspicious aspects are toilets and kitchens. Toilets and drains represent the "flushing" and "draining away" of auspicious aspects of the section they are in.

For example, if your bathroom is in the North of your house or apartment, you may find your career is failing or floundering. Every step forward in your career gets flushed away! You lose your job or clout with a badly placed bathroom. The temporary cure for all bathrooms? When not in use, close the toilet lids! And if the toilet or bathroom has a door, keep it closed at all times too. This will ease a lot of the flushing away of the good luck of the section.

Those of you seeking a romantic partner or better love life, finding nothing but heartache, or having marriage problems may have a bathroom in your Southwest area. Long hallways, particularly at the entrance of your home, may also bring inauspicious luck. The good chi speeds through the long hallway and exits your house. The cure for this is wind chimes in the hall, to slow down the chi. Hollow rods are best, and also colorful peacock feathers in a large vase in the hallway is a great help, and attractive.

The most powerful room to enhance with symbolism is the living room. And if you have a dorm room or you live with a roommate, you can enhance in your bedroom. The rule in Feng Shui, though, with bedrooms -- NO WATER FEATURES, it's very inauspicious. (This means no fish tanks or battery-operated waterfalls, etc., also avoid photos of water). Not doing Feng Shui in the whole place, though, will limit your Feng Shui luck. It is best to enhance the whole living quarters, and focus the symbols in the living room and the bedrooms of each for personal enhancement.

We'll discuss how to do that next week.

Love and Light,
