The Planet Mercury in Astrology
Brilliant
Mercury. The Sun's closest neighbor with a surface that bakes in
the Sun's radiance. Although one of the Seven Ancient Planets Mercury
is one we don't easily see in the sky. Its proximity to the Sun
means it is often obscured by the brightness of day. Or it may lurk
in front of the Sun or behind it, totally washed out. When it is
visible it's just after dark or before sunrise and only for a brief
while.
Mercury represents our thoughts and our reasoning
capacity. New ideas can appear in our mind from Mercury's influence
and just as Mercury was the messenger of old, today it can fuse
concepts that are suggested by the other planets. If Mars suggests
action then Mercury will supply the plans and the direction. If
Venus implies creation, Mercury will give structure to your art.
Since Mercury orbits closely around the Sun, it is often conjunction
with it. During these times our minds will have greater clarity
and sense of purpose.
Mercury is a symbol for logic, communication,
reasoning and education. Using the strengths given by Mercury properly
can lead to wisdom and creativity. Problem solving and the relief
of disputes and conflicts are governed by a strong Mercury influence.
But Mercury can also bring out the negative aspects of the mind.
A lack of emotion and caring can be present. Decisiveness can disappear
in a haze of possibilities and analysis. The clever tongue can drift
toward sarcasm and derision. And a sharp mind can spend its energies
on plots, schemes, criticism and deception. The mind is terrible
thing to waste. Use the power of Mercury to chart a positive course.
